Linguistics Study Guide and Test Taking Skills
Study
- Understand what you are studying (i.e., be able to explain it in your own words).
- Make sure that you understand the text (e.g., there are no unknown words, unclear sentences or paragraphs, etc.)
- Understand the structure of the text (i.e., how the text is organized). Make an outline of the text (map it out).
- Memorize key terms with their definition and one example.
- Memorize your notes, not the text (which saves you time)
- Ask questions (in class, in conferences, etc.)
- Budget time (this is hard stuff) and work in a good location.
Test Taking
- Read the questions.
- READ THE QUESTIONS !!!
- Outline your answer (unless it is a short test). If you run out of time, write down your outline (itıs better than nothing!).
- Essay questions should be answered by first stating in one (or two, maximum) sentences the main point of your answer and then developing the evidence for your answer. In short, with an essay.
- Definition questions should be answered by one or two sentences, very much to the point.
- Check that you have answered all the questions of the test and that you are turning in all sheets you have written.
- Do not waste time writing down the question, or repeating it pointlessly in the answer. Do not waste time using white-out or carefully erasing. Just cross things out if you do not want them considered for your grade.
