Class meets Mondays from
9:00 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. in DeBartolo Hall Room B045 Prerequisite: Required Texts: Little, Brown Compact Handbook,
4th ed. by Jane E. Aaron Goals and Purpose: The purpose of the course is to help you acquire skill and confidence in writing and prepare you to satisfactorily complete English 1550. In this course you will write a series of essays. Some will be written in class; most will be written out of class. We will also read and discuss selected readings from the Prentice-Hall Reader. Grading Policy: English 1540 is graded A, B, C, and NC (No Credit). Three papers will be worth 20 % each, one longer paper will be worth 30 %, and class participation will be worth 10% of your total grade. In order to pass the course, you must attend class regularly, complete all assignments (both graded and ungraded), and participate in class activities. Incompletes are given only if: 1- the student requests one, 2- previous work has been satisfactory, and 3- the reasons given are justifiable and beyond the student's control. YOU MAY NOT WITHDRAW FROM ENGLISH 1540T UNLESS YOU WITHDRAW FROM THE UNIVERSITY. Attendance: Regular attendance is important and necessary to successfully complete English 1540. Under most circumstances, there is no way to make up instruction given or assignments done in a class that you have missed. Perfect attendance earns you an automatic A for class participation. More than nine unexcused absences from class will result in a reduction of your final grade by one letter. More than fifteen absences of any kind will result in a no-credit. Excessive tardiness will be treated as absences. Things to Remember: Always bring writing materials and your books to class. Buy a folder or binder to hold your English essays and drafts. You will also need a notebook for class notes and a computer disk for lab.
