Criminal Offenses Which Bar Employment in Schools: Completing a teacher education program is not the only requirement one must meet to be employed in Ohio schools. Ohio Law (Ohio Revised Code 3319.39) identifies criminal offenses, felonies and misdemeanors, which serve as a bar to employment in a school district. Admission to YSU Teacher Education Programs: Acceptance to Youngstown State University does not mean you are accepted into a program in teacher education. You must meet specific requirements and submit an application. You are prevented from taking many junior and senior classes until you are Admitted to Teacher Education. Information materials containing forms, procedures, and deadlines is available in the Beeghly College of Education, Office of Student Services, Beeghly Hall, Room 2101. YSU Certification and Licensure Information: In order to enter the teaching profession and seek a job, you must hold the proper certificate or license from the State of Ohio. To get this license you must apply through YSU and receive our recommendation. There are also requirements beyond our recommendation. Educational Testing Service (ETS Home Page): Of most interest to students in teacher education programs is The Praxis Series program that provides tests and other services for states to use as part of their teacher certification and licensure process. Colleges and universities use these assessments to qualify individuals for entry into teacher education programs; states use these assessments to qualify individuals for certification and licensure. Ohio Department of Education (ODE Home Page): State governmental agency; provides critical information, services, and support to Ohio's schools and educators. Issues all certificates and licenses required for professional practice in the public and private K-12 schools of Ohio.
