Sources

A total of  8-12 in the final draft, with the following requirements:
  1. At least 2 sources with page numbers [a paginated PDF-format article, a book, a newspaper or magazine article in its original print form, or a photocopied article from a journal, magazine or newspaper]. If you want to look for books, start with the Looking for Books? page from the helpsites section of this website. If you want to look for paginated PDF-format articles, try Academic Search Premier and the other EBSCO databases. [Remember that if you are off-campus, you have to use the OhioLink authorization page to access ASP.]

  2. At least 2 non-PDF articles from any of the following databases: LexisNexis, Newsbank Newsfile, SIRS, Infotrac Health Reference, or any EBSCO Database (e.g. Academic Search Premier). Remember: if you use an EBSCO database, you should look for HTML format articles (not PDF) for this source requirement.
    • Remember: the above links will work only from a YSU computer. For off campus access to these databses, and for information on accessing SIRS of Infotrac, see the directions at the Articles from Online Databases page in the Help Sites section of this website.

  3. At least 3 web sources, one of which (at least) should be an article from an online magazine, newspaper, or journal.
    •  Consult the Web Sources page in the Help Sites section of this web site for some useful links.

Directions

Compose a well-researched argumentative essay of 1500-2000 words. Be sure the essay does the following:

  1. presents a clearly stated claim early in the essay and then supports that claim with evidence

  2. makes use of any two of the four kinds of argument that you worked with in the first four assignments this semester (proposal, definition, causality, evaluation). [One of the four kinds of argument will most likely be the primary form of argument, with the second kind of argument (and possibly a third, too, if you need it) fulfilling a secondary role.]

  3. considers at least two opposing positions or alternative views

  4. effectively incorporates meaningful images and/or graphics into the argument as part of the necessary background information and/or as part of the supporting evidence [see the visual element requirement]
