About YSU's Summer Honors Institute
Youngstown
State University's Summer Honors Institute
is no longer funded by a grant from the Ohio Department of Education.
Due to the support of YSU's Provost and Deans, we are able to
provide gifted students the opportunity to explore and discover
new information in a wide range of disciplines.Courses
have been developed by outstanding university
faculty with the dual purpose of introducing students to a specific discipline
that is not available to them in a high school setting
and providing activities designed for more in-depth study.
Courses are also designed to
provide a high degree of student interaction using a variety of "hands-on"
activities. Appropriate alternative learning experiences are also utilized.
YSU's
Summer Honors Experience is a
non-residential program. Students must provide their own transportation to and from
campus each day. Each student will enrolled in two classes (one morning; one afternoon).
The week of in-depth study culminates in a demonstration of
learning outcomes that we call The Friday Celebration.
Eligibility in the YSU Summer Honors
Institute is limited to Ohio residents who have completed either
10th or 11th grade
by June 2010 and who have been formally identified as gifted and talented as defined by Ohio Administrative
Code 3301-51-15. A building principal, gifted coordinator, guidance counselor, school
psychologist, or other administrator who can verify test/instrumentation data must also
recommend the student. The signature of the authorized school official certifies this
determination.
