Process and Policy for Participation in
Youngstown State University's
2010 Summer Honors Institute

Students (current 10th and 11th grade Ohio residents) who are formally identified as gifted and talented (according to Ohio Administrative Code 3301-51-15) and nominated by a school official are eligible to apply to Youngstown State University's 2010 Summer Honors Institute.
Please note YSU's Institute is non- residential, and parents are responsible for daily transportation. Since enrollment is limited to 120 students who reside throughout the State of Ohio, it should be noted that this is a highly competitive process.

Students who are formally identified as gifted and talented and who reside in Ashtabula, Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull Counties should share their interest in possible nomination to attend YSU's 2010 Summer Honors Institute with their guidance counselor, teacher of gifted services, and/or coordinator of gifted services. School officials in this four-county area are knowledgeable about the number of applications/nominations that respective high schools can submit to Youngstown State University. Application packets may be downloaded following the link below.

Students and school officials outside of the four-county area may download the application and nomination forms online (see link below). Given that YSU's 2010 Summer Honors Institute is non-residential, the applicant must have lodging available with an adult relative or guardian who resides within commuting distance from Youngstown State University, Youngstown, Ohio.

The students' application and nomination forms are submitted by school officials to the Youngstown State University Summer Honors Institute. These applications are
due--not postmarked-- by May 3, 2010. If the applications are being mailed, we suggest they be postmarked no later than May 1, 2010 to ensure receipt by May 3. At this time, applications and nominations will be reviewed/evaluated by University officials.

Students who are accepted to attend YSU's Summer Honors Institute will be notified by mail not later than May 21 and will be instructed on how to complete the enrollment process. Official enrollment forms will be available on-line. Completed forms must be signed by both students and parents and submitted to the YSU Summer Honors Institute on or before June 7, 2010. If the official enrollment forms are not received by the deadline date of June 7, 2010, the University officials will assume that the student has declined to participate. At this time, alternates nominated by school officials will be contacted and awarded participation in YSU's 2010 Summer Honors Institute.

Thank you for your cooperation and attention to these details. We look forward to hosting a dynamic 2010 Summer Honors Institute and providing a learning opportunity of an adolescent's lifetime!
