The following health care guidelines are recommended for new freshman to promote a healthy lifestyle during their college years. Students are encouraged to discuss with their family physician their health record and need to update their immunizations prior to entering college.
YSUs Student Health Services and the Advisory Committee on Immunizations Practices recommend the following preventative care:
Meningitis The American College Health Association strongly recommends that students, especially those living in residence halls, consider this vaccine. This illness refers to infections and inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or other organisms and is potentially fatal.
Hepatitis B Recommended for all students. This vaccine requires a series of three injections given over a six-month period. Hepatitis B is spread by blood and body fluids by contact with cuts, needles used for drug use, tattooing, body piercing, sharing of a razor, sharing of a toothbrush, or sexual contact with an infected person.
Hepatitis A The series of two now on recommended immunization schedule.
Chicken Pox (Varicella) Chicken Pox in adulthood can lead to serious life-threatening complications for those individuals not already immune. Two doses are needed, at least one month apart.
MMR - Measles, Mumps, and Rubella For students born during, or after 1957 two total doses are needed. The second dose is usually administered during adolescence.
Tetanus/diphtheria (dT) Initially given as a series along with pertussis component during infancy and childhood. A booster dose is needed every ten years.
Adacel (Tdap-Tetanus, Diptheria, and Acellular Pertussis) It should replace a single dose of Td and be given to individuals between the ages of 11 to 65.
The Student Health Clinic provides many of the above immunizations as preventative well care for our students. For immunization fees and details click on 'Services Provided' in the menu on the left.
