| Dr. Hanzely was
born on December 30, 1940 in Satoraljaujhely,
Hungary. He graduated from Kent State University with a B.S. in physics
in 1962. He received his Ph.D. in physics from New Mexico State
University
in 1969 where he studied x-ray spectroscopy under Robert J.
Liefeld.
Hanzely has been a member of the Youngstown State University Physics and Astronomy Department since September, 1968. He served as department chairman between 1974 and 1979. From 1985 to 1987, he served as president of the YSU Chapter of the Ohio Education Association. He was appointed to the newly-created position of Director of Faculty Relations in April, 1993, serving until July 1997. He retired in 2002. Hanzely was three times designated as a YSU Distinguished Professor. He spent the 1988-89 academic year at the University of Maryland, College Park, as a member of the MUPPET group studying the use of microcomputers in calculus-based introductory physics courses. In 1994, he was selected as a Fulbright Lecturer and spent a semester teaching physics at the University of Veszprem in Hungary. Hanzely's publications include topics on x-ray spectroscopy and the physics of sports. His current professional interests center on the improvement of science education at the pre-college level. He has received grants from the National Science Foundation, the Ohio Department of Education, the American Association for Higher Education, and from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation to support his efforts in this area. Hanzely continues to be active in such department-sponsored outreach programs as the annual YSU Physics Olympics and the Youngstown Area Physics Alliance. Hanzely is a member of the American Association of Physics
Teachers,
the American Physical Society, Sigma Xi, Phi Beta Delta - the Honor
Society
for International Scholars, and the Fulbright Alumni Association.
