YSU Celebrates Second
Consecutive Phi Kappa Phi Literacy Grant
In April 2006,
Dr. Sandra W. Stephan of Youngstown State University received a
$2,000 Phi Kappa Phi Literacy
Grant to help fund YSU's 2007 English Festival.
The
Festival--an annual celebration of reading and writing--brings
approximately 3,000 middle and high school students to campus to
hear a noted author of young adult literature speak about books the
students have read outside the classroom during the previous
year. Congratulations to YSU professor emeritus (and Chapter 143 member)
Sandra Stephan, writer of the proposal for this second consecutive
literacy grant; to the English Festival Committee; and to numerous other
volunteers for the hard work and dedication they devote to this

Even before the national Phi Kappa Phi organization
designated service as a component of its mission ("To
recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher
education and to engage the community of scholars in service to
others"), members of Chapter 143
were actively engaged in service. The chapter formalized its
service commitment in 2005 by "adopting" the local Mahoning County
Juvenile Detention Center, with the goal of providing training and
educational experiences for youth detained at the center. One of the
youth spoke at the chapter's fall 2005 luncheon, which focused on
the Chapter 143's relationship with the center. If you are
interested in becoming involved, contact Chapter 143 President-Elect
Tammy King at taking@ysu.edu.

Acknowledging
Phi Kappa Phi members' ongoing commitment to service, the Board of
Directors broadened the Society's mission statement. Previously, Phi Kappa Phi's mission statement
had been "To
recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher
education." Although the statement accurately depicted the Society's
key purpose, Phi Kappa Phi members, chapter officers, and board
members noted that it left out an important aspect of membership in
Phi Kappa Phi-service. Thus, the revised mission statement adds the phrase
"and to engage the community of scholars in service to others" to
clarify and highlight this aspect of Phi Kappa Phi:
"To
recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher
education and to engage the community of scholars in service to
others."
