1. THE MARKET

 The Jambar is the student newspaper of Youngstown State University. It is distributed free to all students, faculty, administration, and staff. Published twice weekly during the academic year and once weekly during the summer, The Jambar reaches an exclusive college market with incredible buying power, and has been serving the students at YSU for 70 years. Circulation during the academic year is 5,500, during the summer it is 3,000.

Readers of The Jambar have a large impact on Youngstown and surrounding communities. Students at YSU vary in age, ethnicity, and income. Seventy percent 0f students are full-time, and 90 percent live in the Youngstown/Warren area. About 2,000 students live within a mile of campus. YSU is made up of a large number of students over age 25 - about 30 percent. Most students are employed. Ten percent are minorities, the largest group is African-American, constituting more than 900 students.

2. ADVERTISING RATES

All rates are noncommissionable unless otherwise specified.

National                                $8.00 per column inch

 

Contract Discounts for Open Rate: *

Contract discounts for open rate advertisers are available for clients wishing to place multiple advertisements throughout the year. In order to receive these discounts, a contract must be filled out and signed.

New Advertiser Discounts for Open Rate: *

An introductory offer is available for any new advertiser of The Jambar. Any new advertiser who runs three consecutive prepaid ads will pay the discounted rate of $4.50 per column inch. A new advertiser discount contract must be filled out and signed, and payment must be received in advance. Contact the advertising department for more information.

 * These discounts apply to local/open rate clients only.

 

National Discounts:

A volume discount is available for national advertisers who wish to advertise at least 100 column inches throughout the year. 

The discount is as follows.

3. ADVERTISING SPECS

The Jambar is printed in a five column tabloid format.

¥10 inch wide page format

¥ 19 inch page depth

¥ 61.6 page pica page width

¥ 11.6 pica column width

(Minimum ad size is 1 column x 2 inches.)

2 column = 3 5/16 inches
3 column = 6 inches

Double Truck=23 1/4 inches
1/8 page = 10 column inches

4. SPECIAL FEATURES

Mail Subscriptions

Mail subscriptions are available for $25 per academic year. They can be purchased by contacting our office at (330) 742-3095.

Special Issues:

Throughout the year, The Jambar publishes a number of special issues. These issues may focus on seasons, sports, holidays, spring break, or back-to-school. Other circumstances may also arise throughout the year. The advertising and sales managers will notify you of these special opportunities.

Advertising Inserts:

Advertisers may elect to include a special advertising supplement to be placed within the pages of The Jambar. These inserts can range from flyers & coupons to magazines. The advertiser must supply the printed material. Out of town advertisers must ship the inserts to Gazette Printing, 46 West Jefferson St., Jefferson, Ohio 44047. Local advertisers must deliver inserts to The Jambar office. Deadlines for submission of inserts follow the same deadlines as display advertising (See back page). The cost is as follows:

 

Single Page:        

$50 per 1,000 inserted
($275 for full insertion)

Multiple Pages:  

$60 per 1,000 inserted
($330 for full insertion)

(Based on 5.500 circulation)

Spot Color:

Advertisers have the opportunity to incorporate spot color into advertisements. However, the color cannot be specified. The spot color-of-the-day is chosen by the printer. Color is limited to select pages within The Jambar, i.e., Back page and centerspread. The fee is an additional 10 percent of the normal advertisement cost.

5. PAYMENT POLICIES

Display Advertising:

Advance payment is required for all display advertising until a credit account is established. Once credit is established, billing will be sent monthly with tearsheets. Payment is due no later than 15 days following receipt of the invoice. No ads will be accepted from accounts with balances that are past due. All delinquent accounts will be turned over to the university for collection after 90 days.  All campus advertising must be accompanied by a departmental advertising chargeback form.  The forms are available through Central stores on campus, 742-3110.

 

Classified Advertising:

All classifieds must be pre-paid in the exact amount. Payment can be made with a check or money order in The Jambar office. No cash can be accepted at The Jambar office. Cash payments must be made at the Bursar's office located in Meshel Hall, on the East Side of Wick Avenue via the Wick Avenue Bridge. Orders and payments are accepted either in person or through the mail. No classified orders will be taken by phone. Orders can be taken in The Jambar office, located in Room 0013 in Fedor Hall Monday through Friday. Classified prices are $4 per 25 words. Ads over 25 words will be priced accordingly.

6. ADVERTISING POLICIES

All advertising submitted to The Jambar is subject to the approval of The Jambar or its' designated representative. The Jambar reserves the right to refuse or discontinue any advertisements that discriminate on the basis of age, sex, race, creed or national origin. The Jambar will not print any advertisements that violate any university regulations or city, state or federal laws.

 

Display Advertising:

Position is neither sold nor guaranteed.  Requests will be honored whenever possible.  Design is free, but proofs are furnished only upon request.  In order to receive a proof, the ad must be placed and paid for four working days prior to publication.  The Jambar is not responsible for advertising materials unless return delivery instructions are received within 30 days of use.  If an ad will be late, space can be reserved for camera-ready art by the advertising deadline.

Camera ready artwork is artwork that is perfectly sized and ready to be placed into the paper. No changes are needed. The camera-ready ad must be received by noon the day before the paper is published. The Jambar is not responsible for errors in camera ready artwork. All instructions accompanying an ad should be neatly typed and double-spaced. All mail-order advertising is subject to approval. Advertisements having the appearance of editorial material will be identified as "paid advertisement."

Cancellations & Changes:

Advertisements may be canceled before 10 a.m. the day prior to publication. Cancellations received after that deadline will be charged half the cost. A compensational charge will be made for any extensive changes in copy or format once the deadline has passed. This charge will be determined by the office and advertising managers, and the advisor.  It will take into consideration amount of changes and the amount of time needed to make the changes.

7. ADVERTISING RESTRICTIONS

Political Advertising

All political advertisements must be paid in advance and must include the disclaimer, "Paid Political Advertisement." These ads must also include the name and address of the campaign chairperson. Any advertisement having the appearance of editorial material will be identified as "Paid Political Advertisement." The Jambar has the right to declare what constitutes editorial content.

Alcohol Advertising

The Jambar can legally run the prices of beer and mixed drinks, but cannot advertise any excessive usage of alcohol. For example, "two for the price of one" and "free" cannot be used. The act itself, rather than the advertisement is illegal. It is also illegal to advertise any reduced prices on alcohol after 9 p.m. It is illegal to use brand names of beer and liquor. (The Department of Public Safety).
