97 Joe Ethen writes:  In May, I decided to move on with my professional career. I moved to Iowa and have started Chiropractic school at Palmer. It is OK, the Exercise Science program prepared us well; but it is also very time consuming, about 10 hours of class each day. Alicia and I celebrated our second anniversary this summer with my family in MN. {8/02}

AN UPDATE!!!  Alicia and I would like to announce the birth of our daughter, Gabriella Elizabeth!!!  'Ella' was born on Tuesday, March 2, 2004. She is 19 1/2 inches and 7 pounds 6 ounces. We welcome her to our family with all the love in the world, and daddy loves to spoil her.

Joe has opened a practice in Canfield, OH on Rt 224, just east of Rt 11.

97 Matt Kostek writes:
I've promised Dr. B a few times now that I would post on the website so I'm actually getting around to it now after about 10 years.  I'll keep it short in the interest of time (yours and mine). I completed my MS (Exercise Science) at Ball State after leaving Youngstown and then my PhD at the University of Maryland (Kinesiology).  I'm currently finishing a Post-Doc at Children's National Medical Center in the Research Center for Genetic Medicine in Washington DC and have accepted an Assistant Professor position at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.  My primary area of interest (research) is understanding the impact of genetics on muscle loss through aging, disease, or disuse.

On the family side of things, my wife Tammy and I have been married for 7 years now and we have two children, Connor (2 1/2) and Caitlyn (4 months).  Life in Maryland/DC has been great but we're ready to move on!  I usually see Dr. B every couple years at the ACSM national meeting, which usually provides us about 20 minutes or so to catch up.  I'm glad to hear that everyone is doing well from the looks of the website and wish everyone the best!  If you're thinking about graduate school, do consider the University of South Carolina as I'll be looking for graduate students very soon and a degree from YSU certainly ranks high according to my criteria!!

I ran three legs totaling 13 miles, so I was in the woods running for 2 hours total :-) The picture of the lake was at about the half way point of my last leg, so it was very hard to stay motivated to run a few more miles with your feet filled with water and mud! 98  Ian Marcavish writes: I thought I would send you all some pics of my crazy adventure race I did a
few weekends ago. It was an 8 hour sprint meaning you have to finish in 8 hours. There was canoeing, mountain biking, and running/trekking. We
biked and ran/walked for about 5.5 hours and then hit the canoe for about a 30 minute paddle to trek some more to find the checkpoint in waist high mud
and water and then finally had another 30 minute paddle to the finish line. We finished in 7.5 hours and got 27 of 34 check points and finished 4th out
of 30 4 person co-ed teams! Pretty good for our first time. The race tested us all in different ways physically and mentally. I almost took out
the girl on our team during the biking portion by messing around and jumping my bike over a little hill and ended up ramming straight into her
back knocking both of us off our bikes after I landed (in my defense I told her to never stand on the trail ) and later in the race I did a very
graceful face plant in the woods because I was not picking my feet up very high while running :-) The zip line in the pictures was awesome too since
it was on the biggest hill in the park. Oh and finally to find all checkpoints, were given a topographical map that had small circles on there
at the checkpoints and you have to find them using only a compass and the map.  {5/05}

I am currently running the physical training program at an elite tennis center for the junior academy athletes. The athletes and the tennis pro's come from all over the country to train at this center so it's pretty cool. Some of these kids are ranked high in the nation and have competed against the top names in tennis! The club has recently purchased a facility and tons of land to open a new boarding house for the kids with training, lodging, etc. right on site. 98  Ian Marcavish writes: The 'Dances with Dirt' race was a 62.5 MILE trail run through the woods, rivers, lakes, and mud. Hey there everyone,
just wanted to give you a taste of a crazy run I did last weekend. The temperature was perfect to grill out and drink some beer while tailgating
but that was not for me on that Saturday. Instead, myself and 4 others were a running relay team that covered 62.5 MILES in the woods via with our
FEET. This may sound like it is not that tough since we have 5 people running but imagine running in mud so high it is up to your waist, running
in a creek that you cannot see the bottom, or up a hill that you have to grab on to trees so you don't slide back down :-) Sounds like fun, right?
Did I mention I am not a huge fan of running either? You may ask me what the heck are you doing or why even put yourself through this torture?
Well, no matter how bad it hurt running and how sore I was (umm still sore actually) it is all worth knowing that I did it. I had to run three legs
and they were close to 4 miles each. Two of them had MANY creek crossings and then they ended with a long run up the creek. My last leg was named
"Vertigo" it was a very steep and zig-zagging trail that almost had me falling many, many, times. So overall we finished 35th our of 350 teams.
Besides enjoying the excitement of competition, I participate in these events to remind myself that if I put my mind to it I can get through
anything no matter how bad it hurts.  See the picture on the 'Classmates Pictures Page! {9/12/06}

Saludos de Tejas! (Greetings from Texas!) I am currently in McAllen Texas, located about 45 miles west of South Padre Island and about 20 miles north of the Mexican city of Progreso. It’s February 23rd and my Mom tells me it’s snowing in Youngstown today. Here it’s about 80, sunny, with a cool breeze. If you have to work for free (completing my internship in PT) it might as well be in the south. Dr. B asked me to pen a few line about the area and something that might be of interest to we in the exercise science world.

First, if you’re looking for opportunity, consider McAllen. The population is about 1 million in the Rio Grande Valley, mean age about 35 years, except this time of year because so many people winter (Called Winter Texans) here. Due to the young age of the population exercise is VERY big here; and pays very well. I am teaching 3 salsa (dance) aerobics classes and 2 Pilates classes and getting paid $25.00 per hour. Much more than I ever got in PA or OH. Average 12.00/Hr. also, personal training is VERY, VERY big here. Your pay will depend on your credentials (No degree and No certification = NO JOB, No degree and so-so certification, AFAA, NFPT = about 25-30 an hour, No degree and ACE, ACSM certification = 35 – 45/Hr, 4 yr degree and ACE = 45 – 55/Hr, and finally 4 yr and ACSM = is the highest pay structure at 65.00/Hr.) I’m not doing any personal training right now because I need to focus on the internship, but I may in a few weeks. The most interesting thing is how the pay and referral structure works.

As a personal trainer you have 2 options. 1) Agree to work exclusively for a club. - They handle all the money, book your appointments, and hook you up with potential new clients (Each new member gets a free ½ to 1 hour personal training) The new members are assigned randomly to the Personal Trainers, depending on there
availability. During the “free session” you get to impress the new member with your understating of Exercise Science and get them to sign up. Packages are at the discretion of the Trainer, but not above your credentialed level. (eg. 20 – ½ hour long sessions for 450.00. The members pay the club. The club takes 10% and you get the rest)

The second option – you’re a free lance and work out of several clubs. The house will take 20% and you’re responsible for scheduling, etc. But if you’re really good it’s a nice option. On average, I’m told a personal trainer in his/her second year should be making about $45K year if they work at it and naturally get results for their clients.

Here’s the website for the club I work at. You could E-mail Mike, the owner and brother in the ACSM. www.fitnessedgewellness.com

UPDATE: March 2004

Hello family and friends---As we draw closer to spring so comes the impending graduation deadline for my master's degree at Ball State University.  Overall things are going well, however, I ran into some problems with my thesis project that has delayed my progress.  What happened was a competing lab group from another university published my ideas before I was done working on it.  This is called being SCOUPED in the world of journalism.  Since then I have developed a new project, but as of right now it looks as though I have to work extra hard to graduate in May.  If not I can post-pone graduation until later in the summer.   The research that I am working on now involves human subjects with physiological and cellular changes to exercise.  To be brief, I will exercise subjects and take a sample of muscle (biopsy) and analyze the biochemical and protein properties with in that muscle sample.  For the exercise physiologists and fellow researches in the group, my project title is: " The relationship of AMP-activated protein kinase and Calcium/Calmodulin dependent protein kinase to glucose transporter isoform 4 translocation in exercising human skeletal muscle".  For the lay folk, this is just a way to study how fuel gets into the muscle and how energy is produced during exercise.

In addition, I am anxiously waiting for offers from Doctoral programs that start in the fall of 2004.  I should know where I will be going by mid to late March.

Recently, Ball State decided to document some of the research that is taking place on campus.  The laboratory that I work in and 2 of my faculty advisors were choosen to be featured.  Against my will, I was also "persuaded" to be featured in one of the documentaries.  I have attached these files to this email for your viewing pleasure and to give all of you an idea of what actually happens here (Yes MOM and DAD, I am going to school!)  --see below--

2004 Kurt Michaelis writes:

Wow, things have been pretty crazy since graduation. My advice to anyone getting ready to head out into the real world, is
network as much as possible, and start sending out resumes early. I sent out roughly 75 resumes starting in January, and finally
got a job in May working at Bally Total Fitness. While I liked the job, I soon realized there was no way I would be able to
support a family off of the income. Luckily, one of my very first clients ended up being a former district manager for a
pharmaceutical company and she put me in contact with someone who was still in the business.
Within 3 months after graduation, I started my second job, as I was recently hired by Novartis Pharmaceuticals. I love this job
so much. (Of course, they take care of you pretty well.) So far, I have gone to New Jersey for 3 weeks for phase 1 training,
and right now I am in Boston for 3 weeks for phase 2 training. It is rough leaving the family for those long periods of time, but
like I said, the company will take care of you.
Oh yes, I did say family. Not only had I started 2 different jobs since graduation in May, I also got married and became a
father. My wife is a graduate from Mt. Union and her name is Kristen. My son's name is Bryce, and he is a blast right now.
He is only 5 1/2 months, but he has developed quite a personality already. So, this was another big reason why I needed to
change my occupation.
I will say one thing, going into the pharma business I didn't know what to expect and I thought that there would be a lot of
things way over my head, but I soon realized that I knew a lot more than other people coming in with me. I feel a lot of this has
to do with the preparation I received while at YSU. I know when I was in 3'rd practicum I didn't care for the cardiac rehab
and stuff like that, but now I wished I would have taken more in because I realize how much just the little that I learned has
helped me so far. Of course, now being part of the pharma business I would like to see my former professors teach a little
more about a couple of my drugs I am selling. A couple of those that deal with hypertension are Diovan (Valsartan) and Lotrel
(combination drug of Amlodipine and Benazapril). Lotrel should be a billion drug next yr. My third drug is Zelnorm, which is
a indicated for IBS with constipation and chronic ideopathic constipation. Very good drug as well.
Anyways, that is what is new with me. Hope everyone else is doing well. Take care.
