HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS

TREES
The State Fire Marshal prohibits the use of live Christmas trees in public buildings. Artificial trees which are certified to be flameproof may be used if the administrative person in charge of the area determines that the tree and its placement will not create a hazard. Aisles, corridors, passageways, stairs, or other means of egress should not be restricted or blocked.

ELECTRICAL
All lights and electrical equipment must bear the tag of an approved laboratory. Cords should be inspected for frayed wires, loose sockets and defective plugs. Large flood lights are discouraged since they produce a great deal of heat and present a burn hazard if inadvertently touched or knocked over. The use of small miniature lights are encouraged since they are cool and more energy efficient than the larger type bulbs. Paper and other flammable material should be kept at least twelve (12) inches from any incandescent or fluorescent bulbs or tubes. Any shades covering light sources must be of non-flammable material.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
No trees or displays are to be set up in classrooms or laboratory areas.

Care should be taken to assure that electrical cords and other decorations do not present a trip hazard. Cords should be tucked up under desks and counters and be out of the way of all pedestrians.

If you have any questions concerning the safety of your display, please contact the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety at Extension 3700.

DISPLAYS
All materials used in conjunction with lights must be flameproof. Displays should be compact and must not be placed in hallways or high traffic areas. Garland and streamers should be confined to offices and should not extend into hallways.

Under no circumstances should open flames be used as decorations. Unlit candles may be used if their wicks are clipped or capped to discourage lighting.

Displays and decorations should be placed in well-attended areas to discourage vandalism.

OTHER FIRE PRECAUTIONS
A fire extinguisher must be accessible within fifty (50) feet of a display. If the display utilizes electrical equipment, the extinguisher must have an ABC rating. Displays must not block radiators or interfere with the building's heating system.

All displays should be kept a safe distance from any heat source including computers or any other type of electrical equipment.

All personnel should be familiar with the location of fire alarms, extinguishers and other fire fighting equipment.

In case of a fire, call campus emergency, 911, immediately!!
